Clouseau Consciousness

Before Cosmic Consciousness comes Clouseau Consciousness. I don’t know if you have ever heard of Inspector Clouseau. I don’t mean his character, but the universal life lessons he shares.

If you don’t know who he was, he was a character in the farcical Pink Panther series. Clouseau is inept and incompetent, nevertheless he successfully solves his cases entirely by accident. Not only is he quite a comedic character, but  also he has some profound lessons to share with us.

For example, there’s a moment when Clouseau is investigating a murder. He enters a room with grave scrutinizing powers. In the room he notices there are gymnast parallel bars. He starts to caress the bars smugly reminiscing, “Yes, yes…I was the paralever of the parallel bars.” One of my favorite absurd Clouseau comments. He goes farther and actually starts to play on the bars swinging himself back and forth with self commentary, “Yes, Yes, it’s all coming back to me now…”

As they say, pride goes before a fall. Little did Clouseau know that saying was going to be literal for him! He goes to dismount his landing which would be a perfect 10, but the parallel bars are right next to a flight of stairs (yes, the director had fun with this  scene!). So instead of solid floor, Clouseau goes tumbling down a full flight of stairs as he screams, “Ahhhhhh!”

This scene captures one of Clouseau’s main spiritual themes: it’s best not to think too much of ourselves.

Even though he has a hard fall, he bounces back (literally) and almost instantaneously continues his investigation! He’s unwavering in his goal: finding the murderer.

Through his Clouseau consciousness he’s teaching us to take that same determination until we find God. Thank you, Inspector Clouseau! There are no obstacles, only opportunities!

As Paramhansa Yogananda said, “Never have I realized more than now that the one purpose of all life is to seek God until one finds Him.”.

May we all take our next step (or fall and then jump back up like Clouseau!) towards inner freedom of the heart on this Independence Day!

Love & Blessings,
